Doug Varone and Dancers: Inside the Design Process

by rjohnson at 6:47 pm

This month, Doug Varone and his exquisite dancers take the Joyce stage for the much-anticipated New York premiere of their acclaimed new work, Chapters from a Broken Novel. Kindled by a bold cinematic score by David Van Tieghem, Varone’s Chapters reveals a world teeming with everyday moments exposed for their beauty and rawness.

In this video, Varone talks about crafting the dance from a non-choreographic point of view: considering the way that design elements effect the work, and his many sources of inspiration. Check back daily this week to meet each of our designers and collaborators from Chapters from a Broken Novel.

  1. I was in total awe when I attended the Boston premiere of Chapters From a Broken Novel at the Institute of Contemporary Art (The ICA). With “Chapters,” Doug Varone and Dancers are at the apex of their artistry. This is a work that shares raw emotion, beauty, pathos, and uncovers the human condition with audience members. I loved every second of this new work. It is a must read—-I mean view! Brendanbenfeeney.com
