Get ready to get raggedy when Twyla Tharp Dance presents an intergenerational dance class for young ticketholders (ages 5-14) and accompanying adults attending the September 23 matinee at The Joyce! Learn a movement phrase from Tharp’s loose-limbed and playful THE RAGGEDY DANCES, set to the ragtime music of Scott Joplin. Participants will explore the possibilities found in the phrase and how it can be developed. The class also includes a short warm up from Tharp’s TREEFROG class and is open to all levels of ability. Space is limited. Class length: 45 minutes.
Rika Okamoto, originally from Japan, moved to United States in 1988 and began dancing with the Martha Graham Dance Company, where she met Twyla Tharp. Since she first danced for Tharp in 1993, she has originated numerous parts/roles in Tharp’s many dances and Broadway productions. She assists Tharp and also teaches as a ballet master/guest teacher worldwide. She assisted creating Tharp Treefrog class and the Education Program. She created Summer/Winter Workshop, Children Workshop and 2 year University Curriculum, which was launched in the Fall 2017 at Indiana University. She is also an administrator and an archivist for the Foundation.
Okamoto has also danced and worked with many choreographers and directors, including Maryl Tankard and Pichon Baldin for Disney’s Broadway Musical “Tarzan”, Robert Wilson, Mark Morris, Daniel Ezralow, Jessica Lang, Buglisi/Foreman, and with her teachers - Kazuko Hirabayashi, Pearl Lang, and Yuriko. She has also appeared in numerous commercials, TVs, and films, including film “Across The Universe” directed by Julie Taymore. She was chosen by Steven Spielberg to play the title role “Sayuri” for pre-production of his “Memoirs of a Geisha” project.
