About the Company

Company Website

NW Dance Project was founded in Portland in 2004 by acclaimed dancer, mentor, and choreographer Sarah Slipper. NW Dance Project is dedicated to the creation and performance of innovative, new contemporary dance works from talented choreographers from around the world, all created in an open and artistically stimulating environment. NW Dance Project has fostered the creation and Portland-premiere of over 300 original contemporary dance works to date. NW Dance Project’s award-winning company performs four unique shows in Portland annually and tours regionally, nationally, and internationally. NW Dance Project was honored to be selected to perform at the inaugural American Dance Platform in 2016. NW Dance Project is also committed to advancing dance education, equity, and community engagement through its cost-free Dance Moves arts engagement and access programs; ongoing dance training and classes for youth and adults of all levels, abilities, and in a range of dance styles; and special programs for rising, aspiring, and in-transition professional dancers. Most programmatic elements (creation, rehearsals, classes, special projects, administration, etc.) occur at their light, spacious, and beautiful NE Portland Creative Center, which has grown to become a crucial multi-functional community resource and support center since 2015.

“There’s no mistaking the distinct, delightful genius of NW Dance Project’s dancers and captivating choreography” — MassLive

NW Dance Project is completing a new film project which involved 18 choreographers from around the world creating solo material virtually on five dancers in our studio. Four choreographers created on one company artist, their material “stitched” together to make one solo and filmed in a performance setting. There are five films all together. The project is called CONNECTIONS and was conceived to have choreographers from diverse backgrounds collaborate together with our artists. I have attached one of the solos.
