France’s celebrated Cie Hervé KOUBI returns to The Joyce for its 20th anniversary season with Les nuits barbares ou les premiers matins du monde, an athletic and poetic look at the shared history of the Mediterranean basin. Featuring an all-male cast of dancers from Algeria, Morocco, France, and Burkina Faso, the company investigates a sense of belonging which proves more ancient than the concept of nations. Themes of barbarism emerge from combining capoeira, martial arts, hip-hop, and contemporary styles with virtuosity that “is a touch of theatrical magic” (The New York Times).
This engagement of Compagnie Hervé KOUBI is made possible through the ArtsCONNECT program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. Support for The Joyce’s presentation of international dance provided by the R. Britton Fisher and Family Gift for International Dance.
