Nathan Hurlin
Honoree
Nathan has always had an association with the performing arts. First as an actor/dancer in productions at The Peterborough Players and The Palace Theater in New Hampshire where he grew up, then at Northfield Mount Hermon where he was the first male to “letter” in dance and continued his dance studies at Jacob’s Pillow and in Boston during college.
Nathan realized he enjoyed the strike after the performance a bit more than actually performing and thus began his journey as a Production Stage Manager.
In 1988 he became the Production Stage Manager at Paul Taylor Dance Company, where he met, and married Denise Roberts Hurlin. While there she and fellow dancer Hernando Cortez founded Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Nathan became the de-facto Production Manager for DRA, a position he cherishes.
While at Taylor, he learned the art of putting a show into theaters both large and small all across the world. In 1994, he joined the Production Team at The Joyce Theater, managing one of the most exceptional technical crews in the dance world. It was at The Joyce that his connection to the dance world blossomed. Dancers, Choreographers, Designers, Stage Managers, Master Carpenters, Electricians, Sound Engineers and more.
In 2000, Nathan became the Senior Production Manager for DRA and Broadway Cares, where he dedicated 25 years of service. His expertise in creating performance venues in non theatrical settings is evident in events like the Fire Island Dance Festival and the Hudson Valley Dance Festival, along with Broadway Cares events staged in many theaters on Broadway.
Nathan retired last year and celebrates this honor from The Joyce with Denise, their children, Catherine and Henry as well as many unsung heroes of the technical production community.
