Complexions Contemporary Ballet

Tue Nov 18 - Sun Nov 30

“American contemporary ballet at its best" (The Ballet Herald), Complexions Contemporary Ballet returns to The Joyce to celebrate its 31st season under the direction of Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson. At the heart of the engagement are three highly anticipated world premieres: Imagine Joy, a new creation by Dwight Rhoden set to Samuel Barber’s iconic Adagio for Strings; Young Lovers by rising choreographic force Houston Thomas, featuring the music of Jeff Buckley, Tarika Blue, and MAW India; and I Got U by Co-Associate Artistic Director Joe González, set to an eclectic and compelling soundscape. These new works are joined by the company premiere of Rhoden’s Midnight Riff, a vibrant, jazz-soaked tribute to the legacy of groundbreaking women in jazz—Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Lena Horne, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, and Mary Lou Williams—brought to life with the electrifying sounds of The New York Voices. Rounding out the program is LOVE ROCKS, set to the music of Lenny Kravitz, along with other selections from Complexions’ iconic repertory. Complexions promises a thrilling, unforgettable evening of dance.
