February 15—20 The Joyce in Chelsea
Showcasing powerful Afro-Colombian and Afro-contemporary dance with live music and singing, Colombia-based Sankofa Danzafro presents Accommodating Lie, a full-length work by Rafael Palacios that seeks to dismantle stereotypes and beliefs about the Black body and what it means to be of African descent. Through a series of emotional dances, the Sankofa performers embody decades of slavery and racism, challenging the “exotic” label western colonizing culture has assigned Black bodies. Accommodating Lie continues Sankofa Danzafro’s mission “to dance to be heard.”
